Biomedical Electronics

Biomedical engineering requires solid engineering expertise across the full R&D pipeline, from transforming a scientific idea into a clinically validated and regulatory-approved medical product. Training at the Chair builds on the lecturer’s extensive industry experience and focuses on fundamental principles and hands-on skills in:
1. Biological and medical fundamentals
- Systems-level analysis of biological and medical problems, with a biophysical understanding of cellular functions and the immune system
- Understanding of biomarkers and clinical workflows, with a use-case focus on cancer, cardiovascular disease, sepsis, surgery, and decentralized diagnostics
2. Modelling, data, and analysis
- Computational modelling and simulation of biological systems
- Signal processing, data analysis, and statistics
3. Sensors, systems, and imaging
- Sensors, actuators, and embedded systems for biomedical applications
- Medical imaging systems and image analysis
4. Materials and fabrication technologies
- Materials and interfaces for medical devices
- Micro- and macro-fabrication technologies
5. Therapy, diagnostics, assays, and translation
- In vitro and in vivo diagnostic or theranostic systems and assay engineering
- Personalized therapies
6. Experimental and laboratory skills
- Experimental skills in wet-lab work, sterile techniques, microfluidics, microscopy, in vitro diagnostics, and cell culture methods
- Single-cell manipulation and diagnostics
- Automation, robotics, and laboratory workflows
7. Medical device development and quality
- Design, prototyping, verification, and validation of medical devices
8. Clinical, market, and regulatory context
- Knowledge of clinical and preclinical MedTech markets
- Regulatory requirements for medical technologies
- Understanding of the language and priorities of customers across clinical and preclinical markets
All courses offered by the Chair are intended for Electrical Engineering (EE) students at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level (BSEI & MSEI). Credits for students from other bioengineering degree programs or topics relevant to other EE degrees are specified separately.
