Plants are another type of living organism where sensors can be implanted to monitor vital parameters. Intriguing applications of sensors for water supply and sap flow are found in smart agriculture and forest fire prevention. Whereas the proof-of-principle was obtained with greenhouse trials, the method has to be further validated by benchmarking with conventional techniques of plant physiology, setting up algorithms for data analysis and transfer to outdoor cultures in pilot trials.

Small electric microsensors are implanted into branches of trees to measure the water supply status (drought stress). Thanks to energy harvesting, use of low-cost parts and robustness with respect to handling and harsh weather conditions, the installation of sensor networks for a representative monitoring of larger areas is feasible.
