Franz Kreupl is Professor of Electrical Engineering and head of the Department of Hybrid Electronic Systems at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany, since April 2011. He received the Diploma in physics and the Dr. rer. nat. degree in physics from the University of Regensburg, Germany, in 1994 and 1999, respectively. In 1998, he joined the Central Research Department of Siemens, Munich, Germany, where he was involved in interconnect technology and high-density integration of ferroelectric and magnetic memories. From 2000 to 2005, he was Project Manager in Infineon’s Corporate Research Department, responsible for carbon nanotubes, nanowires, and carbon materials research. From 2006-2009, he was with the Technology Innovation Department of Qimonda in Neubiberg, Germany, where he was in charge of emerging memories and memory systems. From 2009 to 2011, he was with SanDisk Corporation in California, Silicon Valley, as a Principal Engineer and Senior Manager responsible for the development of 3D memory technologies. In 2011, he ended his career and went into academia.

Prof. Kreupl has developed the first integrated carbon nanotube vias (2001), and has demonstrated the first precise localized growth of single nanotubes (2002), the first nanotube power transistor (2003), the shortest (18 nm) nanotube transistor (2004), the first application of graphene multi layers in dynamic RAMs (DRAMs) (2005) included in the 58nm DRAM product, and first graphenic carbon x-ray windows (2015), which are now in high volume production at Ketek. He has authored or coauthored more than 100 publications, contributed six book chapters, has filed more than 390 patents and patent applications and holds more than 110 issued patents. His work is cited over 8000 times, his citation index is 44 for the h-index and more than 44 "Highly Cited Papers" are citing his work.

Franz Kreupl received the Qimonda Innovation Award in 2008 for developing the application of graphenic carbon electrodes in DRAMs. The IEDM 2008 paper “Carbon-based resistive Memory” was selected as a highlight paper of IEDM 2008. He has given more than 90 invited talks and was member of the technical program committees of the IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (NANO 2005-2007), the European Solid-State Device Research Conference (ESSDERC 2007-2019), and the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM, 2008-2009). He was a member of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) Working Group on Emerging Research Devices (2005 - 2015) and serves as expert and reviewer for the European Commission, for top journals like Science and Nature and most recently for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the 350 million euro project "Forschungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland" (FMD). He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Prof. Kreupl is vice chairman of the supervisory board of Erlus AG.
